*June 14 is Flag Day!
*Father's Day is June 17!
*No school on June 18 & 19!
*American Stars Assembly on June 29!

Animal Reports

Our first graders are animal experts. Each students was assigned to an ocean animal such as shark, dolphin, whale, sea otter, sea turtle, and two chose frogs. We learned and wrote about each animal's habitat, prey, and characteristics.

Alberto is learning about river otters.

Maia and Kalib diving with the dolphins.

Fractions are a piece of COOKIE!

We were introduced to fractions in math. We put on our learning hat and entered the world of Fractionland. First, we thought of ways to share with one other friend, two other friends and so on. Second, we were introduced to the vocabulary such as whole, half, third, fourth, fifth, etc. The following day we used our fraction knowledge to share our cookie with friends and ourselves and learned how to write fractions. We had so much fun eating and sharing our cookies! Check it out!

Seek- And- Find

In science, we have been studying different attributes of animals. I gave the students books about different ocean animals. Their job was to find each the attribute words (also or vocabulary words) in the non- fiction text. The students loved reading about the animals and finding their vocabulary words!

Categories of Animals

Today our objective was to investigate different ocean animals and put them into categories based on their attributes. The students were asked to work as a class to figure out which animals belonged in one group or another. They told me where I put them. Then we put them on a chart to list what they had and named each group. We had so much fun!

Ocean Life Unit

Hello! We have started on our science unit about animals. We choose to focus on animals in the ocean since we live near the ocean! We are keeping an Ocean Life Journal. Here are some pictures of them writing about the different categories of animals.

Announcement!!

March 16, 2012
Dear parents and caregivers,

I have a couple of announcements! First, our class has been chosen to receive a grant from Pet Smart to have a class pet! I am thinking about getting a hamster for the class. Please let me know ASAP if your child has any allergies! Please let me know by Wednesday, March 21.

Second, in history we are learning about long ago and present day America. This means we are looking at when you all were children. Please have conversations with your children about how life has changed, such as technology, education, and transportation. With this unit, we are also looking at time lines. I will be asking each student to complete his or her own time line. We will be working on them in class, but I would like students to bring in pictures from each year of their life. So your child should bring in 5-7 pictures. If you do not have any it is okay, after all we are artist and can make our own! ☺

Third, we will be doing a community service event on Friday, March 30. We will be thanking some of our own heroes! A lot of us know people who are in the military and have served in the war. So first grade is taking time to write letters of thanks and hosting a playtime at the park with them. We will be playing games with some actual service men and women. If you know any service men and women, please invite them. It will be on Friday, March 30 from 2:45 to 4:00 pm.

Lastly, we have a class website! This website has pictures of your students learning and having fun and is also a way to keep updated on the latest news, reminders, and announcements in first grade. The website is afcsfirstgrade.blogpot.com. Thank you!

In honor of Dr. Seuss! Happy birthday!!

Happy birthday Dr. Seuss! In honor of your birthday, we read The Lorax and completed an art project. Our art project is our way of helping to save the Truffula Trees and our own trees that are cut down each year. After our art project we watched Cat in the Hat!

Reading Buddies with Third grade

In honor of Read Across America, our class partnered up with third grade to read to each other! We absolutely loved practicing our reading skills with older students! Thank you third graders for such an awesome day!!
